Grocery (and Medical Equipment) Distribution to Families Adversely affected by COVID-19 Unemployment
COVID-19 pandemic has caused financial hardship to families in Fiji where the family wage earner has lost his/her job. Tourism is the main source of income and jobs in Fiji and this has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, parents are struggling to provide the basic food to their children.
A quick survey at Swami Vivekananda College revealed that some 120 students were not bringing lunch to school. The management of Swami Vivekananda College in Nadi responded by initiating a COVID relief program to provide cooked lunch to such needy students. Since 13th July 2020, fresh and nutritious lunch is cooked at the College canteen and served to the students by the staff members and management. The current number of students receiving lunch daily is around 150. The daily cost of providing lunch to 150 students is approximately FJ$250.
